National Asian Languages Appointment for ALC Director

National Asian Languages Appointment for ALC Director

Asian Law Centre director Tim Lindsey has been selected by the Deputy Prime Minister to be a member of the recently-formed National Asian Languages Studies in Schools Program (NALSSP) Reference Group.

This new body, chaired by Mr Sid Myer of the Myer Foundation, has been set up to advise the Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon Julia Gillard MP, on national Asia literacy policy issues and, specifically, on how to support studies of Asia in schools and universities at a time of severe decline in national capacity in this area.

Professor Lindsey, who speaks Bahasa Indonesia, is a graduate of Melbourne Law School and completed his doctoral thesis in Indonesian studies. He teaches and researches Indonesian law, syariah (Islamic law), comparative law and law reform in developing countries. He is Chair of the Board of the Australia-Indonesia Institute and is a practising member of the Victorian Bar.

Professor Lindsey and fellow NALSSP Reference Group members Andrew Blair and Kathe Kirby are quoted in this article which was recently published in The Age.
