Defamation and Privacy: Law, Media and Public Speech
2009-2013
Defamation and privacy laws have changed dramatically in recent years. The changes mean that law must understand and evaluate far more carefully the practices of journalists and other media professionals. This project empirically examines the changes, investigating media production, content and litigation. It critically reviews legal limitations on public speech through analysing the effects and interaction of defamation and privacy laws within international and interdisciplinary contexts. Addressing the need for greater legal awareness of popular media and journalism, the project responds to central questions in legal and media practice.

Open for Business? China's Telecommunications Market and the WTO
China joined the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001 after almost 15 years of negotiations, making extensive commitments to open its markets to foreign investment and trade. This project examines the extent to which China is meeting its WTO obligations in the telecommunications sector, which is of particular concern to countries such as Australia and the United States.
This project is jointly funded by Telstra and the University of Melbourne.
