The CMCL is associated with six major research projects supported by Australian Research Council - four Discovery Projects and two Linkage Projects. The Centre is also working on a collaborative project with the VicHealth Centre for Tobacco Control and an AusAID funded project in the Pacific Islands.

Discovery Project: Defamation and Privacy: Law, Media and Public Speech 2009-2013

This project empirically examines the changes, investigating media production, content and litigation.

Joint Research Project: Open for Business? China’s Telecommunications Market and the WTO 2009
Dr Tania Voon and Dr Andrew Mitchell, along with Mr Danny Kotlowitz, Legal Counsel, Public Policy & Communications from Telstra Corporation Limited. This project examines the extent to which China is meeting its WTO obligations in the telecommunications sector, which is of particular concern to countries such as Australia and the United States.

Discovery Project: Amateur Hour: The Sociolegal Construction of Amateur Media 2008-2010
Professor Dan Hunter and Associate Professor Megan Richardson, along with Professor Julian Thomas from Swinburne University, has been awarded a three year ARC Discovery Grant. The project articulates motivations, incentive and conditions for amateur content production.

Discovery Project: Freedom of Expression in Democratic States: A New Theoretical Direction. 2008-2011
Professor Adrienne Stone, a Law School Associate of the CMCL, has been awarded this four year ARC Discovery Grant which aims to develop a theory of freedom of expression that is free from the distorting influence of the United States jurisprudence and can explain and guide the courts in other democratic countries.

Linkage Project: Cultural Collections, Creators and Copyright: Museums, Galleries, Libraries and Archives and Australia's Digital Heritage 2007-2009

Discovery Project: The Media and ASEAN Transitions: Defamation Law, Journalism and Public Debate in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore 2006-2009

Discovery Project: The Future of Television: Australian Legal Protection of Digital Broadcast Content 2005-2007

Legal Controls on Cross-border Advertising and the World Health Organisation 2005-2007

Linkage Project: Copyright and Cultural Institutions: Digitising Collections in Public Museums, Galleries and Libraries 2003-2005

Discovery Project: Defamation Law in Context: Australian and US News Production Practices and Public Debate 2003-2005

The CMCL took part in the AusAID-funded Pacific Media and Communications Facility, which aims to contribute to a sustainable, stronger media and communications capacity in the Pacific Region.  In particular, the CMCL contributed to the legal analysis in Situational Analysis and Needs Assessment being carried out during the project's first year.

The CMCL and IPRIA jointly funded the 'International Domain Name Law and Policy' project. David Lindsay was the Chief Investigator.
