The 1998 Cambodian Election: The Quest for Representative Democracy, Constitutionalism and Civil Society
Volume 1, No. 1

Graham Hassall

Graham Hassall is a Research Fellow, Centre for Comparative Constitutional Studies, University of Melbourne.
He observed the election on behalf of LAW ASIA.

The election of a new legislature in Cambodia as a result of the 1998 elections involved participation by a large number of eligible voters. This article shows, however, that the process of the elections almost led to the dismantling of the electoral framework as a result of political party machinations. It concludes that the process of constitutional and institutional reform remains incomplete.
