Vale Malcolm Smith

It was with great sadness that Melbourne Law School announced the sudden death of Professor Malcolm (Mal) Smith, on Thursday 22 June 2006.

Mal was the Founding Director of the Asian Law Centre from March 1987 to June 2000, holding the Foundation Chair in Asian Law until 2004. In a ground-breaking 2004 appointment he became the first Australian to teach Japanese Law in the Japanese language in Japan, at Chuo University. Mal pioneered the development of Asian legal studies in Australia and persistently championed its cause all his life.

A former Associate Dean of the Melbourne LLB program, Mal had an association with Melbourne Law School of some 40 years standing. He was President of the Law Students Society (LSS) in 1966, a first class honours graduate (LLB (Hons) 1968 and LLM 1972) and an enthusiastic alumnus. A Foundation member of the Alumni Association and Chairman of the University of Melbourne Law Society, Mal organised class reunions and dinners, including the LSS Centenary Dinner in July 1992.

Professor Malcolm Smith

Mal was a loved and respected colleague, a distinguished scholar, leader and mentor, a loyal and close friend. His death comes as a terrible shock to us all and he will be sorely missed.
