Climate Change Expert Speaks at Law School


Life as a climate change lawyer was the topic of the day when Baker & McKenzie’s head of global climate change and emissions practice recently visited the Law School.

Martijn Wilder heads Baker & McKenzie’s Global Climate Change and Emissions Trading Practice and is regarded as one of the leading legal advisors in the world, having worked in the area for over 10 years. Representing an international client base, Mr Wilder has advised numerous governments, multilateral banks and international agencies on the development and design of climate change and emissions trading laws including the EU, Australia and NZ, Malaysia, a number of Southern African governments, UNEP and UNDP.

On the eve of the introduction of an emissions trading scheme in Australia, Mr Wilder spoke about some of the key experiences and transactions he has worked on as a lawyer over this time and what could be expected as Australia introduces its own emissions trading scheme.

Mr Wilder spoke as part of the Guest Lecture Series, which is open to all Melbourne Law School students and staff.

Law teaching in Australia began in 1857 at Melbourne Law School. In 2008, Melbourne Law School celebrates another first, becoming the first all-graduate law faculty in Australia: all entry level students are now admitted to the global standard, Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
