Castan Centre Human Rights Moot


The team of Laura Bellamy, Chris Hibbard and Mick Power narrowly defeated the team of Dimitri Ternovski, Devon Whittle and Rebecca Hughes in the annual Castan Centre for Human Rights Mooting Competition which was held in the Court of Appeal recently. The winning team will receive $3000 and the runners-up will receive $1000.

The judges for the final - President Maxwell (LLB 1984) of the Court of Appeal, Judge Howard of the County Court and Dr Helen Szoke, CEO of the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission - all commented on the extremely high standard achieved by both teams in the final, remarking that the written and oral submissions were of such a high standard that they would not have been out of place in the daily list of the Court of Appeal.

Congratulations are due to both teams for their efforts and for their representation of the Melbourne Law School with such distinction.

Law teaching in Australia began in 1857 at Melbourne Law School. In 2008, Melbourne Law School celebrates another first, becoming the first all-graduate law faculty in Australia: all entry level students are now admitted to the global standard, Juris Doctor (JD) degree. It is home to more than a dozen research institutes and groups, offering its students and staff both meaningful opportunities for and access to a rich and authentic communal life.
