On 1 July 1983, the High Court of Australia handed down a decision that prevented the Tasmanian Government from damming the Franklin River, thus ending one of the largest environmental controversies in Australian history. The case was definitive in constitutional history and heralded the beginning of environment legislation in Australia. The controversy was also one of the major factors that led to the Hawke government coming into power in 1983.

Come and delve into the memories of three individuals who were intimately involved with the issue. Justice Habersberger had served as one of the counsel inthe Tasmanina Dam Case, Professor Barry Jones was Minister for Science at that time and Ms Karen Alexander was an environment activist who had a significant role in coordinating the anti-dam protests.

They are your window into the past. They will give you an insight into the political, social and legal turmoil at that time. They will bring the words in the High Court’s judgment to life.
