Federal Attorney-General delivers lecture at Melbourne Law School

Federal Attorney-General delivers lecture at Melbourne Law School

Melbourne Law School students were delighted to welcome the Federal Attorney-General, The Honourable Robert McClelland MP, to the Law School on Thursday 21 August. After enjoying lunch with a small group of JD and LLB students as well as senior Law School staff, the Attorney delivered a memorable lecture to a large, enthusiastic audience.

Dean of Melbourne Law School, Professor James Hathaway, introduced the Attorney who spoke on the topic: “Promoting Human Rights within a Strong Legal Framework”. Not surprisingly his talk attracted a keen response from the audience, with students given an opportunity to question the Attorney on his views and plans.

The Attorney’s visit was part of the popular Guest Lecture Series, which is being run for the first time in 2008 for Melbourne Law School students. It involves a series of weekly lectures on current issues in law and legal practice delivered by practitioners and leaders in business, politics and many other areas of the community.

Law teaching in Australia began in 1857 at Melbourne Law School. In 2008, Melbourne Law School celebrates another first, becoming the first all-graduate law faculty in Australia: all entry level students are now admitted to the global standard, Juris Doctor (JD) degree. This new program builds on a rich tradition of success, which has enabled Melbourne Law School graduates to become leaders in legal, political and public life across Australia, and around the world.

The faculty is distinguished by its commitment to the integration of cutting-edge scholarship with teaching and knowledge transfer activities, and by its insistence on the critical importance of cross-disciplinary and comparative analysis across the full range of its degree programs. It is home to more than a dozen research institutes and groups, offering its students and staff both meaningful opportunities for and access to a rich and authentic communal life.
