The Work of History in International Law and Empire

The Work of History in International Law and Empire

Professor Anne Orford and Professor Gerry Simpson, together with Dr Louise Arimatsu (LSE), will co-host a workshop on 'The Work of History in International Law and Empire' at the LSE in October. The workshop will bring together scholars from Australia, Finland, France and the UK, to explore the work that history does, or should do, in internationalist scholarship.

While in the UK, Professor Orford will present a public lecture at the LSE on 'Jurisdiction without Territory: From the Holy Roman Empire to the Responsibility to Protect', give a seminar to the Westminster International Relations Forum and deliver a keynote address entitled 'The Passions of Humanitarian War' at Lancaster University. That address will launch the interdisciplinary 'Touching War' project, being directed by Professor Christine Sylvester with the Department of Politics and International Relations www.lancs.ac.uk/fass/events/touchingwar

During his month-long return to the UK, Professor Simpson will host Luis Moreno-Ocampo, the Chief Prosecutor of the ICC, at a public event in London, speak on 'Lawing War' at the University of Leicester and teach The Law of War Crimes and Public International Law at the LSE.

Law teaching in Australia began in 1857 at Melbourne Law School. In 2008, Melbourne Law School celebrates another first, becoming the first all-graduate law faculty in Australia: all entry level students are now admitted to the global standard, Juris Doctor (JD) degree. This new program builds on a rich tradition of success, which has enabled Melbourne Law School graduates to become leaders in legal, political and public life across Australia, and around the world.

The faculty is distinguished by its commitment to the integration of cutting-edge scholarship with teaching and knowledge transfer activities, and by its insistence on the critical importance of cross-disciplinary and comparative analysis across the full range of its degree programs. It is home to more than a dozen research institutes and groups, offering its students and staff both meaningful opportunities for and access to a rich and authentic communal life.
