Allen Hope Southey Memorial Lecture: Reflections on the History of Women in Law

Thu 19/03/2009
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Speaker Professor Mary Jane Mossman
Description

"A Century after Grata Flos Greig's Comment on 'The Law as a Profession for Women' (1909): Reflections on the History of Women in Law"

Victoria was the first State to grant admission to women in Australia: the statute was passed in 1903 and Grata Flos Greig was the first woman admitted in 1905.

Professor Mary Jane Mossman of Osgoode Hall Law School, Canada, will speak on her comparative research about the “first women lawyers” in different parts of the world, reflected in her book: The First Women Lawyers: A Comparative Study of Gender, Law and the Legal Professions (Hart Publishing, 2006).  She will also reflect on the intersection of ideas about “professionalism” and “gender” in her current research, and in relation to recent developments in Ontario, where the Law Society is promoting a project to get 50 of the biggest firms to commit to issues of equity for women in legal practice.

Professor Mossman’s teaching areas include Property Law, Family Law, Family Law Policy, and Law, Gender, Equality.  In both her legal scholarship and her community activities, Professor Mossman has also been involved in a variety of issues relating to legal aid and access to justice. In addition to receiving an Honorary Doctorate of the Law Society of Upper Canada, Professor Mossman has received the Medal of the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Award of Excellence of the Canadian Association of Law Teachers, a Canadian Bar Association (Ontario) Distinguished Service Award, Bora Laskin Fellowship in Human Rights, the annual award of the Advocacy Resource Centre for the Handicapped, and a Teaching Excellence Award at Osgoode Hall Law School.  In 2006, she was also awarded a Leadership in Faculty Teaching (LIFT) award by the Government of Ontario.
