Associate Professor Beth Gaze

Beth Gaze joined the Law School in 2005.  She has degrees in science and law from Melbourne and Monash Universities and the University of California (Berkeley), where she held a Fulbright postgraduate student grant, and has been admitted to legal practice in Australia.  She is a member of the Centre for Employment and Labour Relations Law and the Centre for Comparative Constitutional Studies in the Law School.  

Beth’s research interests are in anti-discrimination and equality law, feminist legal thought, and administrative law including tribunals, and she has a particular interest in socio-legal research including empirical research.  She has conducted empirical research into the enforcement process under Australian federal anti-discrimination law, and is currently a Chief Investigator on two ARC Discovery Grant projects that involve empirical research: Coherent, independent and user-friendly? Participant perceptions of social security administrative review processes in Australia and Britain with Professor Belinda Fehlberg (2005 to 2009) and Non-discrimination laws and religious freedom: current conflicts and future directions with Professor Carolyn Evans (2007-2009).

Beth has taught Administrative Law and Discrimination and Equality Law at Melbourne Law School.  She has been involved at University level in equity and human research ethics committees.  She is currently an elected member of the University’s Staff and Student Equity Group and a member of the Law School's Staff Equity and Diversity Committee, and she was Chair of the Law School’s Equal Opportunity Committee from 2006-2008.

She has also been involved in public policy research, and is currently a Consultant to the Victorian Parliament’s Scrutiny of Acts and Regulations Committee in its Inquiry into the Exceptions and Exemptions in the Equal Opportunity Act 1995.  Beth was previously a member of the Advisory Committee to the Gardner Review of the Equal Opportunity Act 1995 which reported in 2008.

Current Research Interests

Equality and anti-discrimination law with a focus on employment and work-family conflict. 

Comparative equality and human rights laws and their administration

Tribunal processes and administration, including tribunal enforcement in discrimination law and in other areas such as social security and mental health. 

Empirical and socio-legal research.
