Melanie is a member of the Tax Group, where she practises primarily in GST and income tax. Melanie also does a range of audit, dispute resolution and tax litigation work relating to structured transactions, the petroleum resource rent tax and the research and development tax concession. As part of her tax litigation practice, she has expertise in tax administration issues, such as the Commissioner's access powers and undertaking judicial review of administrative decisions.
Melanie has been involved in a range of matters for the mining and resources industry sector. For example, she recently advised on the deductibility of mine expansion costs. She was also closely involved in a successful mediation with the Industry Research and Development Board in relation to whether mine development costs were eligible for the research and development tax concession.
Melanie has also advised, or prepared ruling applications, on the GST consequences of share buy-backs, corporate acquisitions, demergers, reinsurance and loyalty programs.
Before joining the firm, Melanie worked in the Office of the Chief Tax Counsel of the Australian Taxation Office.
