Student Advice

JD students can expect to receive high quality, accessible advice regarding all aspects of their student experience.  We offer three tiers of advice that include an Online Advisor, Professional Staff and Academic Staff advice.  You may receive direct advice at any tier and you may also be referred to more specialist services for advice relating to particular issues including Careers, Academic Skills, and Wellbeing.

Online Advisor

The Online Advisor is a first port of call for your questions about your studies including enrolment, course planning, international opportunities and more. Please log in to the Online Advisor using your University email username and password.

Professional Staff

You can make an appointment with a professional staff member in the Student Centre for advice of an administrative or course planning nature.  Professional staff can advise on many course planning matters including: enrolment; acceleration; course structure; course load; international opportunities; legal internship; exchange; degree partnerships.

A typical student advice appointment may include discussion about your course plan ideas; career goals; work/life balance; enrichment activities (such as international study opportunities); and personal commitments.  All of these things can be taken into account when working out a course plan and determining referrals to specialists.

Professional staff may refer you to specialist services offered by the Law School or the University.  They may also refer you to meet with an academic staff member for more detailed advice on subject choices or other academic matters.

To book an appointment with a professional staff member contact the Student Centre by telephone on 03 8344 4475 or by email to law-studentcentre@unimelb.edu.au

Please note that an online booking system for meeting with Student Centre staff is under development and details about this will be posted on this web page in due course.

Academic Staff

You can make an appointment with a Course Director, or other appropriate members of academic staff, either directly or by referral.  For Course Directors, appointments can be made via the Associate Dean's Assistant.  Academic staff can advise you on course content, specific law knowledge, career goals and aspirations etc. within the context of their role as Course Director or particular area of expertise.

Course Directors will refer administrative queries to the Online Advisor and/or a professional staff member in the Student Centre.

Please contact Kelly McDermott to make an appointment with the Course Director (Students) or the Associate Dean (JD).  Kelly can be contacted by email to kellymm@unimelb.edu.au. Contact details for other academic staff will be offered during referral by a professional staff member or Course Director.
