The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) is, for most applicants, the first step in the admissions process for the Melbourne JD. Local applicants should follow the steps below to apply for the Melbourne JD.
Step 1: Register for the LSAT and sit the test
The LSAT is a half-day written test, designed to measure aptitude for graduate legal study. It focuses on reading and verbal reasoning skills, and no knowledge of law is required. It is an independent, international test, administered by the Law School Admission Council (LSAC), which sends results directly to Melbourne Law School . It can be taken in any Australian capital city and in many countries around the world. Applicants must obtain an LSAC account number before applying for the Melbourne JD.

- If you have any queries, please contact us
Please note that there are strict LSAT registration deadlines and fixed test dates. There may also be more than one venue in Melbourne. If you are unable to register for your chosen venue please notify the Melbourne Law School Student Centre immediately. Applicants who have taken the test within the last two years may use those results for admission purposes.
Step 2: Write your personal statement
Your application must include a personal statement of up to 850 words. It should explain why you want to study law at Melbourne Law School and emphasise any aspect of your personal history that may enhance your application, including extra-curricular activity, community involvement, work experience, caregiver responsibilities, relevant personal characteristics and any outstanding achievements. In particular, the selection committee wants to know what has motivated you to undertake law studies.
Statements should be typewritten, the pages should be numbered, and the applicant's name and date of birth should appear on each page.
Step 3: Submit an online application
Submit your application online, including official transcripts of all tertiary study already undertaken.
