Question (#33): I have a question about legal research - who can I talk to at the Law Library?
 
Answer: We welcome questions from students. You can visit us on level 3 of he Law School building, phone us on (03) 8344 8913, email us at law-lrc@unimelb.edu.au or use our ereference service.

Question (#32): What happened to the password sheet that the LRC used to issue to students?
 
Answer: The password sheet was replaced by a new authentication system. You can now access any of our databases using just your surname and library barcode (with no spaces).

Question (#31): Can I access legal research databases from off-campus?
 
Answer: Yes. All our legal research databases are available for off-campus use. Access them in the normal way via the Law Library home page or the catalogue. You'll be asked to authenticate using your surname and library barcode (with no spaces) so have your student card handy.

Question (#28): What is SPIN?
 
Answer: Students with a compatible notebook equipped with an ethernet card can connect to the Student Plug-In Network using a network cable. Question (#27): Do the computers inside the PC Labs have CD/DVD burners?
 
Answer: No. There are several computers that have DVD-ROM access but most have CD-ROM access only.

Question (#26): Can I request for software to be installed?
 
Answer: Any request for the installation of software can be requested by sending an email to law-labhelp@unimelb.edu.au. Requests are fulfilled on a case by case basis.

Question (#25): Can I install software onto the Law PC Labs?
 
Answer: No. Students are prohibited from attempting to install illegal software or attempting to elevate user privileges for the installation of software on any of the computers within the Law PC Labs and Alan Katz Room.

Severe penalties apply including immediate suspension of all IT Access across campus.

Question (#24): What does it mean when it says that I cannot log on 'interactively' when accessing the Law PC Labs?
 
Answer: This can occur if you have only recently set up your email account. Please allow 24 hours for the permissions on your account to be set up.

This message also occurs if you are not actively undertaking any law subjects, i.e students enrolled in Semester 2 Law subjects will not be granted access during Semester 1.

Question (#22): How do I log on to the computers inside the PC Labs?
 
Answer:

Before you can log onto the computers, you will need to set up your email account at http://accounts.unimelb.edu.au. Please allow 24 hours for your account to be processed before attempting to log on.

Note: Only students currently undertaking a law subject are granted access to the PC Labs.
