About
The Melbourne Law Masters offers masters degrees and graduate diplomas across more than 20 specialist legal areas to deepen knowledge and understanding in a general or specialised area of law. The program offers over 160 subjects that may be taken for credit towards an LLM or one of more than 30 specialist degrees or diplomas, or as single subjects. Program innovations in 2013 include new, discrete specialisations in Energy and Resources Law and Environment Law, and around 40 individual subjects that are offered for the first time. It is one of two teaching programs at Melbourne Law School which has been at the forefront of legal education for more than 150 years. In 2012 Melbourne Law School was ranked as the highest law school in Australia and the eighth highest in the world by the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings

Rich blend of teaching expertise
The program has an outstanding cohort of teachers including almost 100 leading practitioners and judges; more than 50 visiting international experts (link to international visiting lecturers page) and Melbourne Law School’s own highly skilled faculty. Our practitioners and judges from across Australia include partners in law firms, members of the practicing Bars, serving and retired judges and leaders in the business and not-for-profit sectors. The opportunity to learn from such a broad range of distinguished professionals and scholars is one of the most exciting aspects of the Melbourne Law Masters.
Diverse network of students and opportunities
Students come from all parts of Australia and all regions of the world and comprise both law and non-law graduates. The program attracts an extraordinarily diverse range of international students and in the last five years we have had students from more than 60 different countries, located in every continent in the world. The diversity of the student body is an integral part of the quality of the program - it provides students access to an international and interdisciplinary network of individuals united by their experiences at Melbourne and professional ties to their field through our dedicated teaching staff, many of whom are leaders in their field.
International Focus
The program has a distinct international focus through our students and teaching staff, and the international perspective of the curriculum. In 2013 more than 60 subjects are offered in public and international law. The Law School is host to a range of research centres and institutes (link to research centres page) specialising in a wide variety of fields, many of whom have a distinctly international focus. Students are encouraged to participate in the Research Centres' activities and to use the Research Centres as a resource to pursue their own particular research interests
Extraordinary breadth and range of subjects and specialisations
The Melbourne Law Masters offers a very wide range of subjects structured around more than 20 areas of legal specialisation. Law graduates may choose to pursue either a specialist degree or diploma or an LLM, which gives them the flexibility to choose any subjects to design their own program. Non-law graduates may enroll only for a qualification in an area in which they have relevant experience. In 2013, more than 100 subjects will be offered in commercial law. Each specialist legal area is headed by a Director of Studies with expertise in the field who may also draw on an advisory board of practitioners and scholars in developing the specialist legal area (link to specialist legal areas page) from year to year.
A program tailored to the needs of its students
The program has a flexible and responsive course design: most subjects are taught intensively over a week (excluding the weekend) in small interactive classes. This format makes it practicable for students from outside Melbourne to study part-time and enable all students to immerse themselves in the subject matter for a stimulating five days. Other subjects are offered at intervals across a twelve week semester and are accessible primarily to full-time or Melbourne based students.

Melbourne Law School is in cosmopolitan Carlton, on the edge of the Melbourne CBD and within short walking distance of the Melbourne legal precinct. The Melbourne Law Masters is an integral part of the Law School, with access to all university services, which lie just across historic University Square. The program offers more than a degree; students have the opportunity to enjoy the cultural, sporting and gastronomic life of Melbourne, often described as one of the world’s most livable cities.
