MLM: A Snapshot

The Melbourne Law Masters offers masters degrees and graduate diplomas across more than 20 specialist legal areas to deepen knowledge and understanding in a general or specialised area of law.

A fine law school

In 2011 Melbourne Law School was ranked as the highest law school in Australia and the ninth highest in the world by the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings (opens in new window). Melbourne Law School has been at the forefront of legal education for more than 150 years. A degree from Melbourne is an asset that is recognised throughout the world.

International perspectives

Melbourne Law School has a global outlook, equipping students with the skills and knowledge needed to work in an increasingly interconnected world. The Law School's strong international focus means students will have opportunities to study overseas and the chance to explore exciting subjects that track and responds to global legal developments. Our academics work internationally and transnationally, bringing their expertise to develop a comprehensive curriculum that allows students to work confidently across national boundaries. In 2012 more than half the subjects offered in Melbourne Law Masters are international or transnational in character.

Rich blend of teaching expertise

MLM teaching brings together the School’s own leading researchers with experts from the practising profession and scholars from law schools and other institutions in all regions of the world. Practical experience and international perspectives thus further enrich the research led teaching for which Melbourne is known. At the same time, this network of linkages benefits the School and its students in a host of other ways. In 2012, more than 150 senior fellows from outside the School will teach in the program, around 50 of whom will come from countries overseas.

A program tailored to the needs of its students

The program offers subjects in different formats, for the convenience of its mixed cohort of full-time and part-time students. Many subjects are offered intensively, over the period of one week, at intervals through the year. These make it practicable for students from outside Melbourne to study part-time and enable all students to immerse themselves in the subject matter for a stimulating five days. Other subjects are offered at intervals across a twelve week semester and are accessible primarily to full-time or Melbourne based students.

Diverse network of students

The Melbourne Law Masters attracts an extraordinarily diverse range of students. MLM students come from all parts of Australia and all regions of the world and comprise both law and non-law graduates. The diversity of the student body is an integral part of the quality of the program. It also gives MLM graduates access to an international and interdisciplinary network of individuals united by their experiences at Melbourne.

Wide range of subjects and specialisations

The Melbourne Law Masters offers a very wide range of subjects structured around more than 20 areas of legal specialisation. Law graduates may choose to pursue either a specialist degree or diploma or an LLM, which gives them the flexibility to choose any subjects to design their own program. Non-law graduates may enroll only for a qualification in an area in which they have relevant experience. Each specialist legal area is headed by a Director of Studies with expertise in the field who may also draw on an advisory board of practitioners and scholars in developing the specialist legal area from year to year. Active learning

All classes are limited in size to encourage discussion and interaction so as to further enhance the level and quality of the learning experience. Class rooms are organised in a seminar style format. While teaching styles differ, all teachers invite active engagement from students.

Marvellous Melbourne

Melbourne Law School is in cosmopolitan Carlton, on the edge of the Melbourne CBD and within short walking distance of the Melbourne legal precinct. The Melbourne Law Masters is an integral part of the Law School, with access to all university services, which lie just across historic University Square. The program offers more than a degree; students have the opportunity to enjoy the cultural, sporting and gastronomic life of Melbourne, often described as one of the world’s most livable cities.
