David Studdert is an ARC Federation Fellow at the University of Melbourne. He holds a joint professorial appointment in the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. He joined the faculty in January 2007 from the Harvard School of Public Health, where he was Associate Professor of Law and Public Health. Professor Studdert has previously held positions as a policy analyst at RAND (Santa Monica, USA), a policy advisor to the Victorian Minister for Health, and a practicing lawyer.

Professor Studdert’s research is focused on policy issues at the intersection of the legal and health care systems. His work is primarily empirical, blending methods from the social and statistical sciences with more traditional legal analysis.

Recent research projects have addressed the performance of the medical liability system, the etiology of medical injury, health care complaints, litigation against nursing homes, the evolution of informed consent law, and conflicts of interest in medical research.

Professor Studdert has authored more than 140 articles and book chapters. His work appears frequently in leading international medical, health policy, and law journals. In 2004, he received the Alice S. Hersh New Investigator Award from AcademyHealth and in 2011 he was awarded a Laureate Fellowship by the Australian Research Council.
