Dr George Beaton is a director of several consulting and advisory firms in Australia and the United Kingdom focused on the professions. In his academic career, he has been a Professor of Medical Education in the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (1975-1979) and a Principal Fellow/Associate Professor in the Melbourne Business School, University of Melbourne (1989- 2001). He was founding Director of Studies of the Law School’s pioneering Graduate Diploma in Managing Legal Organisations.

He has written for Management of the Australian Law Practice, Marketing in Practice and Professional Marketing, and is a regular commentator on professional services for the Australian Financial Review, The Australian and other media. George has spent more than 30 years consulting to senior management and boards of diverse organisations, ranging from major public companies, private businesses and professional service firms, to government departments and public institutions in Australia, New Zealand, South-East Asia, the United Kingdom and South Africa. He has worked intensively with law firms of all sizes, in-house legal departments, law societies and other law-related professional associations, and law schools. George’s management experience includes top executive roles in tertiary education, consulting, advertising and market research firms.

George research interests are in the origins and nature of professionalism and its current and future place in society.
