Martin Scheinin is Professor of Public International Law at the European University Institute in Florence. Previously, he was Armfelt Professor of Constitutional and International Law at the Åbo Akademi University, where he also was Director of the Institute for Human Rights. He served as the first United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms while Countering Terrorism (2005–2011) and has held various positions in human rights NGOs. His expert services have been used by organisations including the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the United Nations, the Council of Europe and the European Union.
