Paul Hayes holds the degrees of LLB from Queensland University of Technology and MSt from the University of Cambridge, where he was also a Visiting Fellow in 2005-2006 (Faculty of Law, Lauterpacht Centre for International Law).

He commenced practice as a Barrister at the Sydney Bar in 1990, before relocating to the Melbourne Bar in 1997, where he now conducts his practice from Owen Dixon Chambers West as a member of Dever's List and also from chambers in London, where he is a member of 39 Essex Street, after being called to the Bar in England (Lincoln’s Inn) in 2005. Prior to commencing practice at the Bar, Paul worked as a Lawyer in Sydney with Allen Allen & Hemsley (Allens Arthur Robinson) and Baker & McKenzie.

He practices predominantly in commercial & equity litigation, sports law, international law (public and private) and common law (defamation and insurance) and has appeared in a wide variety of cases (ranging from Court of Arbitration for Sport appeals to large-scale complex commercial matters and jury trials) in numerous jurisdictions within Australia and also overseas.

Paul has published numerous journal articles and spoken at conferences, at home and abroad, on a wide range of sports law and general legal topics. He is the Founding Editor of the Australian and New Zealand Sports Law Journal, the Chair of the International Law Committee of Commbar (the commercial law association of the Victorian Bar), and contributes Op-Ed articles from time to time to The Australian and The Times in London on issues concerning the law and politics.
