Robert holds a BCom (Hons) in Industrial Relations and an LLB from the University of Melbourne and is completing a Doctorate of Philosophy in the Faculty of Economics and Commerce at Melbourne. His thesis, 'League Structures, Labour Markets and Competitive Balance: A Study of the Australian Football League', examines the regulatory structure of the AFL labour market and the economic effects of such regulation upon the evenness of the AFL competition.
Robert has lectured at a number of Australian universities in the fields of sports management, sports law, sports economics, industrial relations, human resource management, and governance. He has been a member of the Editorial Board of the Sport Management Review, reviewed papers for journals in fields including economics, law, management and history, and has a number of publications in high-quality academic journals and specialist books. Robert has provided formal consulting and other advice to Australian sporting organisations on matters relating to labour markets, competitive balance, governance structures, marketing and sports history issues. He has been a director of companies in both the private and not-for-profit sectors.
