wto moot court competition

We are delighted to announce the release of the case for the 2007–2008 global Moot Court Competition on the Law of the World Trade Organization (WTO) run by the European Law Students’ Association (ELSA). We are looking for four enthusiastic students to create the Melbourne Law School team. Applications are due by 5pm on Friday 21 September 2007, as detailed in the flyer.

As you may know, Melbourne Law School performed exceptionally well in this moot in 2006-2007 (the first time Melbourne had entered). Our team of Chian Kee, Dave Heaton, Elizabeth Sheargold and Sarah Kemeny won the entire competition by prevailing in the regional round in Adelaide and the global round in Geneva. These four students, coached by Dr Andrew Mitchell, defeated teams from 64 universities including Duke, Georgetown, Sydney and the London School of Economics. The team’s prizes included scholarships to the summer school in WTO law at the World Trade Institute in Berne.

The WTO Moot Court is a unique opportunity to work intensively with a small team of Melbourne students and staff members, meet students and professionals from Australia and around the world, develop your written and oral advocacy skills, and learn more about the rules governing international trade as well as public international law. Last year’s team found competing in the moot the highlight of their time at university, and we don’t think that was just because they won.

We look forward to your involvement.

Andrew Mitchell & Tania Voon
